My name is Nick Hall, and I’m a historian of film and television technology in the Department of Media Arts at Royal Holloway, University of London.

My PhD examined the history and use of zoom lenses in American film and television (especially between 1945 and 1974). You can watch a short video about my research here, and you can contact me by emailing nick@zoomlenshistory.org.uk.

This website currently includes a number of short biographical sketches of key zoom lens innovators, a bibliography of key articles on the zoom lens, zoom shot, and related issues, and some links to useful free online resources for carrying out film and television history. Below, you can find blog entries – not all of which are related to the zoom lens project.
